Last week on Dance Moms, Kelly Hyland was happy that her daughter Brooke was offered a chance to sing at the Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC) recital, but upset that her other daughter, Paige, was the only one who had to learn a new solo for the show. Kelly and Abby fought about it, then the Hylands walked out. This week on Dance Moms season 3, episode 31 titled, “Clash of the Dance Moms”, Kelly and Co. are still absent, so Abby brings Payton Ackerman and her mom Leslie into the group. Abby’s nemesis, Cathy Nesbitt-Stein from the Candy Apples Dance Center (CADC) is back, along with talented choreographer Anthony Burrell (and his mom!). During the episode we see two commercials featuring Abby: one for season 2 of Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition (AUDC) – it begins on September 3 – and one advertising Abby’s appearance on the bra fitting show called Double Divas (August 6, 10/9c).

National Geographic Channel Premieres 'Inside The American Mob' Series

L to R: Michael Franzese and Sal Polisi from Inside the American Mob
By A.D. AMOROSI

On Sunday, July 28, The National Geographic Channel debuts its newest series, Inside The American Mob. That title immediately keys you into what happens throughout the six week series, focusing on New York City’s Mafia families, and their turf, as told through those who lived it. Newly declassified FBI files and first-person accounts by the good guys and the bad guys (a line often blurred) makes this a must-see documentary. On July 24, several of the series’ participants – former Colombo and Gambino associate Salvatore Polisi and one-time Colombo capo Michael Franzese – invited members of the press to Philadelphia’s Dante & Luigi’s (762 South 10th Street) for dinner, wine and conversation. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

In Dance Moms season 3, episode 30 titled “Recital Rebellion”, teacher Abby Lee Miller is nervous about her studio’s upcoming recital. Kelly is upset that her daughter Paige has been assigned a new routine for the show, because normally the girls do numbers they already know in recitals. Then, Abby pulls Paige's number and gives the slot to Maddie, resulting in Kelly and her daughters walking out. On happier notes, Dance Mom Jill gets a solo in the recital, and the girls from the Abby Lee Dance Company (ALDC) compete for the cover of Dance Track Magazine.

By A.D. AMOROSI

True Blood season 6, episode 6, titled “Don't You Feel Me?" was the series’ saddest, most thrilling show so far. Terry Bellefleur was assassinated, per his arrangements. Bill drank Warlow’s blood, and it made him able to walk in the sun; he promptly headed over to Vamp Camp to free Jessica, his progeny, and decapitated Governor Burrell in the process. Sookie and Warlow drank each other’s blood and had sex. Never before during an episode of True Blood did I find myself crying and cheering so loudly.

Review: Andy Kaufman Has a New Album Almost 30 Years After His Death

Cover from new Andy Kaufman release titled
Andy and His Grandmother, the new release from the late Andy Kaufman
By A.D. AMOROSI

The name “Andy Kaufman” conjures many images. He was Latka Gravas, the man-child mechanic on Taxi, the comedian who lip synced the words to “The Mighty Mouse Theme” on Saturday Night Live, the tropically clad conga-playing performance artist, the wrestling enthusiast despised for fighting women, and, of course, the ultimate insult comic, “Tony Clifton.” In reality, Kaufman was a supreme improviser who made his entire life into a skit. There was nothing that wasn’t comedy to Kaufman. He was always on, and so was his tape recorder. That’s what we hear on Andy and His Grandmother (Drag City/Process Media), the first release culled from over 80 hours of Kaufman’s personal recordings made between 1977 and 1979.

Gaga finished off ARTPOP, her hotly anticipated third album. On Friday July 12, she gave a release date for the album and its app (November 11, 2013), and its’ first single (August 19). By A.D. AMOROSI

Before John Davidson settled into his most recent role as The Wizard in Wicked (at Philadelphia’s Academy of Music through August 4), he was an icon of variety entertainment, a role he’s held since making his debut on Broadway with Foxy in 1964. Since then, he’s been everything from a touring musical actor (name a show, he’s been in it), a consummate host (his own talk shows and guest host gigs for Johnny Carson and Mike Douglas), a nightclub entertainer, a Disney film star (The Happiest Millionaire; The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band) and a harbinger of reality television (That’s Incredible!). Mostly, he’s been John Davidson, the consummate, chiseled All-American Boy, who just happened to turn 71.

By A.D. AMOROSI

In Season 6, episode 4 of True Blood, titled “At Last”, the blood-lusting vamps have their way with Bon Temps’ human populace and several young faeries. Sometimes, the vampires take it violently and by surprise, like when Jessica attacks Sheriff Andy’s faerie daughters. Other times, the outpouring of blood is by consent, like when Eric Northman turns Willa. Eric is by no means having a good week though: by episode’s end, all three of his women – Pam, Willa and Nora – are captured and sent to the vampire internment camp.

Two weeks ago in Philadelphia, entrepreneur Stephen Starr and Executive Chef Peter Serpico held the first of their "Friends and Family" dinners before the opening of their hotly anticipated South Street restaurant, Serpico. The meal we attended was a boisterous occasion (loud, as every Starr preview is, from the acoustics of the room, the free flowing libations, and of course, the volume level familiar to Philadelphians in general) for a chef known for his flavorful mash-ups of all-world fare. On opening night, the usually quiet Peter Serpico opened up about his past – personal and professional – as well as what the future in Philly looks like.

With Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgård) and Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) fighting different battles for the future of the vampire species, and the Stackhouse family warring against uber-vampire Warlow, True Blood season 6, episode 3, titled “You’re No Good,” is more transitional than action-packed. Still, there are some interesting turns in regard to Eric’s kidnap victim, the Governor’s daughter (Amelia Rose Blaire), religious zealot-turned-vamp, Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian) and, of course, his holy rolling, vindictive ex-wife Sarah (Anna Camp).
